Luiz Carlos Trabuco has successfully led Bradesco as their CEO since 2009. They have a large footprint in the private Brazilian banking market. As one of the largest, they have a scope of products and services which their rivals find difficult to match. They have flourished under the leadership of Trabuco as he is known in the business.
The financial crisis that was gripping Brazil and the entire world was the backdrop for Trabuco when he was appointed as Bradesco’s CEO. Trabuco showed his mettle as he brought Bradesco safely through the most difficult economic time in recent memory. Despite reduced economic activity in general, he positioned them for a rebound when conditions improved.
The top spot in Brazilian banking is always of great interest to those in the industry and those watching from the sidelines. When Luiz Carlos Trabuco assumed his post of leadership Bradesco had just been eclipsed by their rival Itaú Unibanco. Trabuco wasn’t shaken by this development and he focused instead on improving Bradesco’s organic growth initiatives and emphasized doing a great job for the communities that they serve. For several years, this was the preferred path of Trabuco and Bradesco.
This all changed when Luiz Carlos Trabuco engineered the purchase of the Brazilian branch of HSBC for US $ 5.2 billion. This was the largest purchase of its kind in Brazil during 2015. This made Bradesco once again competitive in the running for the top private banker in Brazil. This purchase was the equivalent of six years of organic growth accomplished with one fell stroke. This important deal has led to Luiz Carlos Trabuco being named as the Entrepreneur of the Year in Finance by DINHEIRO in 2015.
Earlier in his career, Trabuco was the head of marketing at Bradesco and was instrumental in ushering in a new era of increased publicity for the bank. Prior to the reforms that Trabuco implemented, Bradesco didn’t talk with the media at all. This increased the bank’s exposure in the public eye and made them more transparent in their operations.
Trabuco’s performance when he was with the Insurance division was especially noteworthy. Under his steady leadership, their revenues were significantly increased and contributed greatly to the overall prosperity of the company. They doubled in size and held a firm grip on leadership in Brazil as well as Latin America. He was also named twice as the Insurance Personality of the Year.
Luiz Carlos Trabuco has eschewed and downplayed obvious displays of wealth and success. He avoids flashy apparel and prefers conservative business attire and that makes him more approachable. He has a ready smile and is happily married with three children.
Trabuco was born in Marília in 1951 and it was here that Bradesco’s first branch came into being. He graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy, Science, and Letters of the University of São Paulo. He began working for the bank in 1969 as a clerk in his hometown of Marília. Two years later he moved to the bank’s headquarters at São Paulo and continued his development with Bradesco.
Another noteworthy achievement by Trabuco was an innovative program that he brought to life. The Corporate University that he instituted was a training ground for promising young executives to learn their jobs better and the culture of Bradesco. He canvassed high-level executives at Bradesco to learn who was qualified for this additional training. The program has been a success with the next generation of leadership being cultivated and promoted from within.
Luiz Carlos Trabuco has spent his entire career with Bradesco and knows the company and their operational procedures like few others. He provides a solid example of quality leadership and is admired for his efforts.
