The cash settlement of $3.75 million that Lacey and Larkin used to fund Frontera Fund came into their hands after they filed a legal case against their unlawful arrests and detention instigated by Jose Arpaio who was the previous Sheriff of Maricopa County
The arrest happened due to their publication’s revelation of an investigation by conducted by a grand jury that involves the aforementioned sheriff. In the ensuing proceedings during their litigation against Joe Arpaio, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin emphasized the First Amendment Rights in their defense for publishing and baring the news concerning the former sheriff.
